Green Apple Award winner:-
The Howard Centre has won 5 Green Apple awards- the annual international campaign to recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world. 1) The Green Travel Plan
The Green Travel Plan consists of:
· Waterless Car Wash & Valet
Innovative UK pilot scheme that results in no foul water run off to the drainage system and is listed as a positive aspect on the Centre’s Aspects and Impacts Register
· Cycle Restore Project
Promotes resource reuse by restoring unclaimed old and damaged bikes and providing these to worthy recipients in the UK and Africa.
· Staff parking
Staff parking restricted to tertiary bays to encourage car sharing 2) Power Perfector Energy Saving
Power-Perfector uses voltage optimisation to regulate the voltage supply for site plant and equipment, thereby reducing unnecessary energy use.
Energy savings of 150,000 kWh achieved 3) LED Power Saving
LED lighting has been installed in the malls and car park areas.
Energy savings of 390,000 kWh achieved 4) Waste Management
Waste paper, cardboard, plastic and wooden pallets are collected by our waste partner for recycling. In addition general waste collected from the Centre is secondary sorted with 20% recycled and 80% recovered for energy. Zero waste is sent to landfill.
Segregated bins have also been introduced in the mall for separate collection at source, with extra training provided to tenants to encourage high quality recycling. 5) ISO 14001 project
The Centre was also a runner up in the BCSC Gold Sustainability Awards 2015 for the ISO 14001 project.
